Storm of Chaos

Session Twelve: Sea of Fire
The party investigates the City of Brass and completes a task for Fumeran.

Now in the Elemental Chaos, the group decided to head to Fumeran’s palace to seek a way home. With Alhezid as their guide, they made their way through the City of Brass with minimal danger, finally reaching the palace. With a bit of dealing, they managed to buy their way home from Fumeran with a task they could complete for him. They were asked to head to the Sea of Fire and destroy a vessel that carried a cargo for a rival Efreet. Fumeran granted them a protection against fire so that they could traverse the magma. They made their way to the city docks and were provided a small rowboat. Some way out they encountered a creature swimming in the magma that attacked them.

a

They destroyed the creature with some difficulty and began to search again for the vessel. Eventually they spotted a ship with a crew of Azer aboard that had the markings of Abdul-Azim Abassi, the Efreeti Sultan on the side. They moved close to the vessel then jumped it, defeating the crew. The Azer panicked, releasing a small blue slaad upon them in desperation. The party killed the slaad, but not before it infected one of them with its terrible phage. The group took what they wanted from the ship’s cargo then destroyed the rest. They sailed both vessels backs to the docks to report back to Fumeran about their success and find a cure for the slaadi infection.

Session Eleven: Death of an Emperor
The group breaks into the palace, steals the treasure and kills the dragonborn emperor, but their escape may have been thwarted.

The group headed over towards the palace to find a protest going at the entrance to the building over city taxes. Seeking easier entrance, they riled up the crowd. The crowd grew uncontrollable, pushing their way bit by bit into the palace. The palace guards did their best to hold back the protestors, but did not have the numbers they needed. When the crowd had pressed their way halfway through the palace, the royal wizard appeared. He cast some kind of unusual spell that made the entire palace shake. Then he fled. The party realised that they could smell sulfur, but decided to continue further into the palace. The crowd roared its way into the throne room and the party slipped away from the crowd, heading upstairs.

a

a

a

a

Obsidian made her way upstairs first, confronting the royal wizard as he attempted to halt her progress. After a short time, Maramros and Morg joined her upstairs. They fought against palace guards as they flooded the top floor, dispatching the royal wizard with haste. Maramros ventured further into the rooms on the top floor, finding the Empress and her children huddled together. He attempted to calm them first, but Obsidian came into the room disguised as a palace guard and was more successful.

a

a

Morg caught up to them after defeating a room full of guards and together they led the Empress and her children through the floor, asking her to show them to where the Emperor was so they could ensure he was safe.
Morg and Maramros worked together to bar the entrances to the rooms they passed through, confounding the newly arriving guards at every turn.
The group found the Emperor hiding inside a panic room past the slave quarters with a few guards. Morg and Maramros kept their distance while Obsidian went in with the Empress.
Hearing more guards arriving, Morg went to one of the doors he had barred and threw aside the table with absolute ease, opening the door for Maramros. He then unleashed a blast of flame that burnt nearly everyone in the hallway to a crisp.

a

a

Meanwhile, Obsidian questioned the Emperor about his treasure, telling him that if she knew where it was she could prevent it from being stolen if the crowd made its way upstairs. When he told her it was in a secret compartment under his bed, she attempted to attack the Emperor, but the Empress had quick reflexes and caught her dagger hand before it could kill him. She tried to convince the woman that her husband had been replaced with an imposter, but she would not believe her. Eventually, she broke away from the Empress and stabbed the Dragonborn Emperor deep.
He was poisoned by her attack, but managed to keep on his feet. He attempted to fight back by breathing golden flames at Obsidian, but she managed to stab him again, this time taking him in the neck. He died immediately and Obsidian threw her blade aside, severing his artery and splattering the Empress and her children with blood.

a

They headed to the bedroom, finding quickly the secret chamber and took the treasure. They wasted no time escaping from the palace, making their way as quickly as possible to leave. When they reached the front, they were bewildered to find that the palace was no longer in the city of Xin-Tijh. Alhezid, Maramros’ familiar, told them this was the Elemental Chaos and across the way they could see the City of Brass. It appeared that the royal wizard had transported the palace here in the wake of the emergency.

Session Ten Point Five: The Past
Two flashbacks reveal a bit of Morg and Maramros' past.

This session was a flashback to two major events that happened to Morg and Maramros.

Morg’s flashback was to his time with the monks of Mnelasi who, upon finding him in the snow, took him in. He could not speak, but slowly he began to learn by listening to the monks and through their teachings. He noticed after some time staying with them that they practiced daily rituals that involved strange movements and even brief bouts of controlled fighting. He was interested, and joined them. The monks taught him everything they could about their martial arts over the next few weeks. Morg became quite skilled at fighting quickly. One day, a wyvern and it’s babies came to attack the monk village, almost killing everyone living there. Morg fought valiantly, but was not strong enough yet to defeat the creature. He lost consciousness fighting it, but a strange thing happened. He felt a power within him gathering and the energy was expelled in a massive blast that knocked the creature unconscious. He awoke the monks, who remarked that he must have some kind of magical power locked away inside him. Eventually, Morg decided to leave the monks to search for clues about his creator and why he was made.

a

a

Maramros’ flashback was to a task he was given whilst in the city of Xin-Tijh not too long ago. Alhezid had returned on his daily visit to the Elemental Chaos with the spells that Maramros needed but had other news as well. Fumeran, Maramros’ benefactor had requested that he find and destroy a group who were trafficking something illegal beneath the city. Al-hezid told Maramros that the Efreeti competed for power in the mortal realm through their agents (in this case, Maramros) and having domination in an area was incredibly useful to them. Maramros accepted the task and headed under the city as quickly as he could. After a brief search, he uncovered a cavern that was host to a small storage room. Maramros carefully snuck up to it in the dimly-lit cavern to find that it was locked. After a short bout of attacking the door, he had weakened the wood enough to bash through it with his shoulder. Inside the room he found crates and barrels containing a fine powder substance he recognised as Dla’iss dust, a narcotic that was illegal in most places. He decided to destroy the crates and lit the whole building on fire. As he left the building, he heard noises coming from across the cavern and discovered that there were several dragonborn coming down a stairwell. They bickered about their task of moving the heavy crates of the dust until Maramros acted. He sent over Alhezid
to fight them, utilising his familiar’s ability to cast a single spell to engulf the dragonborn in flames. It wasn’t long before there was nothing left of them but ashes and Maramros destroyed the rest of the crates. Alhezid revealed to Maramros that he knew the name of the efreet that the dragonborn ultimately worked for: Abdul-Azim Abassi.

Session Ten: Reconnaissance
The trip to the palace gives some important information for the group before they attempt their heist.

The party had retrieved the map of the palace and studied it, marking key areas. After looking at the map for some time, the group decided to head to the palace to get some reconnaissance on the number of guards in the publicly accessible areas. They wandered wherever they could without being stopped by guards, and took care to note their positions and how many there were. As they approached the throne room, they overheard a conversation going on between a distressed dragonborn woman and the Emperor. The woman was complaining about taxes being too high and after a brief pleading of her case with the Emperor, left in a hurry. On the way out of the palace, Morg and Obsidian stopped her. Obsidian, lying about being a local artisan, suggested that the woman start a protest rally with her fellow workers next to the palace. The woman was riled up by the conversation and left to arrange for the protest. The party now had a potential distraction to use for breaking in to the palace. When they left the palace, Obsidian had a confrontation with Shale. Obsidian told Shale that she had successfully killed the Emperor and was now leaving the scene of the crime. Shale remained skeptical, but took her word and left Obsidian alone. A short while later, Obsidian told the same lie to Marble.

Session Nine: The Map
The party traded for a map of the Emperor's palace and Maramros had an encounter with an old friend of Obsidian.

Captain Redloch announced to the crew of the Avarice that he would offer a reward to anyone who could find a legitimate map of the Emperor’s Palace in the city. To this end, Maramros, Morg and Obsidian met with an information broker in the city known as Andujar. He was apprehensive at the idea of getting them a map of the palace, but agreed. The group headed into the city of Xin-Tijh, enjoying the sights and sounds of the marketplace. Obsidian recognised a familiar face in the crowd. Shale, followed by a cadre of cloaked followers, was searching in the marketplace. Obsidian and Morg managed to hide from her, but Maramros was not so quick. She asked him if he knew anyone named Obsidian, and he lied to send her away as quickly as possible.
The group headed to Maal-Destir, a food place in the market. They found the food of the Dragonborn to be quite tough.
They headed back to the ship, chatting with Mileena and Wulrech about the storm around the isles, among other things. Before long, it was time for them to return to Andujar and retrieve the map. They did so, but Andujar was terrified. He told them that he only just managed to escape from a local architect’s home before the city guard raided the place. He managed to recover the map and wanted to clean his hands of it as soon as he could.
The party returned to the ship with the map and the captain invited them into his quarters to study it.

Session Eight: The Wizard
A fight breaks out, Maramros joins the group and a plan is hatched.

Maramros, a sha’ir wizard had just managed to outrun a nearby tavern’s owner after his familiar, Alhezid, stole a drink of Arkhosian Dragonblood.
He managed to duck into another building called The Twisted Talon.

After recovering their wits from the previous battle and after Morg made an unusual discovery about himself, Marble, Obsidian and Morg made their way to The Twisted Talon. Marble had elected to buy Obsidian a drink and catch up.
On the building outside, Obsidian noticed a wanted poster with her picture on it. The reward was 5000gp if she was dead and 10000 if she was alive. Entering the bar, they noticed that a hooded wizard across the room from them was busy playing a game of cards with a dragonborn.
Marble found a table and bought drinks over, then told Marble about Shale. Shale, one of her fellow assassins, had been sent on a mission to assassinate a high priest of Bahamut on a nearby island. There was apparently an underground group of Zehir worshippers on Oldaka that wished to eliminate the temple of Bahamut on the island.

A short time passed as they spoke, then a group of soldiers came into the building. One of them commanded: “In the name of Xin-Daigo II, holy ruler of Ojira and Lord Emperor of these lands, we hereby demand a search of everyone in this bar!”
The owner complied and the guards slowly made their way around the room, eventually coming to Marble and Obsidian. He questioned them, revealing that he had a ring of true seeing and could see that Obsidian had been attempting to conceal her identity with her own ring of disguise. At that moment, another city guard barged through, seeing Maramros and seeking his capture for the crime of theft.
A fight broke out and the trio of Marble, Obsidian and Morg fought the guards tooth and nail. Maramros took the opportunity to run upstairs and leapt out the window to the street below. Seeking an escape, he ran into the pirate crew of the Avarice. Noticing other guards in the street coming to investigate the noise, he hastily joined the pirate crew and they all marched on The Twisted Talon.

a

Once the group had time to talk, it was revealed that Captain Redloch had discovered a rumour that the Emperor, in this city, possessed some of the legendary treasure they were seeking.
The group hatched a plan to sneak into the palace, but first they needed some reconnaissance on the palace so they weren’t getting into a deathtrap.

Session Seven: The Festival of Scales, Part Two
The heroes fight some mysterious dragonborn and things from their past collide with the present.

Obsidian and Morg continued to run from the massive zombie horror that pursued them. They managed to get ahead of it, arriving in a plaza with a giant dragon statue in the centre.
As they entered the plaza they noticed dragonborn dancing and celebrating, but heard a scream as they looked to the southern end of the buildings. A dragonborn was burning in a circle of flames and on the roof was a hooded dragonborn with an orb and wand in its hand. It looked over at Morg and Obsidian, asking what they were doing here. Morg and Obsidian both made a rude gesture at the dragonborn, which enraged it. It demanded they give it respect, and called out to an ally across the street from it on another roof.

a

A number of zombies shuffled and stumbled their way into the street from around the corners.
Morg and Obsidian decided to climb onto the rooftops too, attempting to leave the plaza and lose the dragonborn duo and the undead. They heard a deep roaring sound and saw that the massive zombie they had escaped from finally arrived in the plaza, clumsily running into the street. Just when the situation looked dire, a cloaked figure in black arrived on another rooftop. It called out to Obsidian: “You look ridiculous in that disguise!” Then she leapt to the back of the giant zombie and began to stab it with daggers.
Morg and Obsidian decided to attack the now-distracted dragonborn in the street, as the more nimble of the two attempted to climb onto their roof.

Eventually the woman in black managed to kill the big zombie, turning to fight the dragonborn mage who had begun to cross the street. Morg and Obsidian joined her, Morg putting down the head of the dragonborn he’d torn off. They proved victorious as Obsidian and Morg quickly dispatched the remaining zombies.

a

The new arrival introduced herself as Marble. She told Obsidian that she should return to the Horns of Midnight (assassin group) so that she can plead for her life, otherwise Grandmaster Zethaya would send minions out to bring her home. Obsidian declined, preferring to take her chances with the minions and travelling with her pirate crew. Marble said that she would not stop her, but they should catch up before she departs. She offered to buy a drink for Obsidian while they conversed.

While this was happening, Morg felt a strange sensation in his head. He began to hear a voice speak to him:
“Hello, my creation. I am the mage, Mordenkainen. This spell was designed to activate some time after ye had gained consciousness. I should first start by saying that there are numerous spells that I have placed in yer body. This first was designed to activate once ye’d had enough time to get used to being aware and how it feels to have a body. Hopefully ye can walk, by Ioun. Ye are my last hope, my last desperate attempt to survive this conflict. The Sage Council has turned on me. We have been at war for many years and I feel myself growing weary, running out of places to hide. I fear that the Seven will find my hideout soon and shall seek an end for me. It is likely they will succeed, but you will be my legacy. At some point in the future, you will be found and others will likely seek to unlock yer secrets. If they can awaken ye, then my life’s work will not have been in vain. However, the secrets I have placed inside ye are powerful and should not fall into the wrong hands. As such, they have been locked behind ten layers of magical protection. As far as I can tell, nothing less than a god or near-god mortal could pry the secrets from ye.

I have a request, and by all means, I understand if ye refuse. I am merely an old fool who seeks to maintain his life’s work. There is an island called Ikawu. Under that island I have entombed a monolith that will activate when ye touch it. This will unlock the first layer of magical protection. It is likely that it will have been hundreds, maybe thousands of years since I placed it there however. Be careful. And, know this. Though I have never met you and may never have the chance, you are the closest thing I may ever have to a son. If you do help me, then I thank you."

Session Six: The Festival of Scales, Part One
The party head to Ojira and discover undead nemeses.

The captain inspected the treasure and told the party that they should check if anyone on the ship can read the strange writing on the gold plate. Wurlech, the dragonborn, read that it says “freedom.”
The captain said they were to make for Ojira, they needed to replace the ship’s wizard and could look for leads about the rest of the legendary dragonborn’s treasure.
As the day got dark, the party thought they could see another ship following them on the horizon. The next day, there was no trace of it. Over the next few days they sailed to Ojira and reached it by late afternoon.

The crew arrived at the port of Xin-Tijh to find very little of the population present. The captain was surprised because he expected to encounter more resistance to their pirate ship being docked here.
The party looked at the banners held up in the street, and realised that it was the Festival of Scales in Ojira, where they celebrate the draconic heritage of the Emperor Xin-Daigo, as he is said to be descended from a gold dragon. During this festival, many different offerings to Bahamut are made. There were coloured lanterns lit everywhere and massive colourful banners strung in the streets. The houses had lots of statues on them, ranging from large to small dragon heads and pointed corners shaped like claws.

The captain suggested they split up to search for any rumours about the treasure. First mate Sadie made sure to let everyone know that deserters would be hunted down and keelhauled.
As Obsidian and Morg walked the streets, they noticed lots of dragonborn, people-shaped scaly creatures with dragon heads in long, dark robes.

The pair heard moaning sounds and Obsidian could smell rotting in the street and slowly shambling dragonborn creatures stumbled out of alleyways. They began to head towards the group, but they decided to hurry through the street. They noticed a shadowy figure standing on a roof nearby and decided to investigate. When they reached the rooftops, they noticed that the creature was a woman with incredibly pale skin. She ordered the zombies to attack them and attempted to knock the two of them back down into the street. After some time in combat, she magically forced the zombies to swell and shift and they merged together. Soon the resulting larger zombies also merged, making a huge creature that was as tall as the buildings. Realising they might be in over their heads, Morg and Obsidian fled down the street, knocking the pale woman off the rooftops before they ran. Behind them, they could hear the hulking undead creature following them.

Session Five: Into The Underdark
The underdark is a dangerous place and it is wise for travellers to find a swift exit.

The party heard a loud rumbling sound and through a wall behind them burst a gigantic insectoid-looking creature. It had burrowed through the wall and began to run towards them. They didn’t hesitate to respond and headed down the nearby ladder into the cavern beneath the cave.

They saw a group of goblins who were taking a drink from a river and Obsidian decided to change her shape to that of a goblin with her magic ring. She spoke to them and told them she was from another goblin tribe, but eventually thought it fruitless to follow them back to their home and the goblin band left.

They travelled around in the underdark, trying to find their way around in the dimness, finally coming to a small dwarven town called Forgehome. Obsidian again decided to transform and took on the likeness of a dwarf. She told the guards at the town gates that she was from the Blackhammer clan and Morg was her construct. She was fortunate, as there was a real Blackhammer clan and they were well-known in town. Before they got the chance to enter town however, a duergar necromancer named Mardovic was spotted approaching the town with a small army of zombies. The town guard and the party fought them, defeating them all. They were granted entrance to the town and quickly found their way to a local tavern, seeking to ask for a way to the surface. They found that the dwarves here did not venture to the surface often and moved their town when they ran out of resources. Uncertain, Obsidian decided to sleep the night there, but Morg did not have to sleep for as long and stayed up.

a

Morg noticed a fancy-looking dwarf entering the tavern with two armed guards and he drew the old dwarf’s interest with his metal skin. The dwarf introduced himself as Halagmar, the town mayor and Morg decided this could be their chance. He went back over to wake Obsidian, who begrudgingly awoke to meet the mayor. The mayor had found out that they were the ones who stopped Mardovic and thanked them personally for their efforts. When they asked him how to get to the surface, he provided them with a guard to escort them there. They left Forgehome briskly, seeking to reunite with their pirate crew as soon as they could. On their way to the surface, they encountered a few underdark predators, but nothing they couldn’t handle as they made their way to the surface.

Session Four: Dungeon of the Kobolds

The party continued down into the cave, finding a broken wall that had collapsed leading to a bridge across a chasm. The captain behind them called out, asking what they could see, but he could not hear their reply. He asked again, louder, but still couldn’t hear their reply. The cavern rumbled with the echo of their voices as they called out. Finally, a last yell caused a cave-in. The passage that had led between the natural cavern and a tiled floor was filled with debris.

a

The crew called from the cavern side, saying that they would try to clear the rocks, but the party was determined to find out what they had discovered. The only two that had been on the other side, Obsidian and Morg decided to explore the area. They heard the sound of kobolds up ahead and Obsidian decided to use her illusion ring to appear as one of them. She walked up to them, noting that they were standing behind collapsed pillars. They pointed her over to the left of the large central room and she followed them to discover a fire along with some branding tools and a cage. There was another collapsed wall here, one that lead into a watery cavern and two more kobolds. They appeared to be inspecting the water for some reason and asked for her help.

a

a

Meanwhile, Morg explored the central room of the dungeon. Unfortunately he could not be quiet enough and alerted the attention of a few of the kobolds. Obsidian entered the water to find that four strange creatures made from the liquid jumped out of it. Surprised, she stepped back and slowly crept away while the kobolds dealt with the threat. The two kobolds in the cavern called the others for help and left Morg to deal with later.

a

Morg uncovered more of the area, finding the statue of an amphibian surrounded by blood and piles of straw for domesticated animal beds. Continuing further down the hall together, they found that the tiles ended at a broken-in door. Past the door, the cave stretched across another bridge and into the darkness.

a

Approaching the bridge, Obsidian noticed some drake creatures standing on the other side of the cave. They leapt over to attack her, but she and Morg dealt with them swiftly. More drakes came from around the corner and a kobold seemed to command them in their strange language. The kobold left the drakes to fight, turning around to ring a gong on the other side of the wall, alerting the remaining kobolds back in the other section of the caverns.
The battle grew fiercer as around the other corner came a white dragonling, the size of a huge dog. It fought the heroes, bringing them to the edge of destruction, but eventually the dragon was defeated. Obsidian used her assassin tricks to fool the kobolds who approached to flee and the group searched the area for the dragon’s belongings.

a

a

They found a large amount of gold, gems and a few other treasures. Notable among their discovery was a golden helm which they discovered could be used to control others, at a cost. They also found a gold plate inscribed with letters that looked much like scratch marks made by claws.
